Harmonious
relation with your colleagues
is critical not only
for your mental and
emotional well-being
but also for your future
growth within the company.
The
general principles that
apply to good human
behavior outside the
office are effective
in fostering stress-free
relations with colleagues
within the company too.
The most important thing
to remember to improve
relations at work is
that you should understand
whenever you say anything,
or do anything, that
is going to affect others,
you are dealing with
emotions. This basic
understanding can save
you from many difficult
situations and help
you strike good relations
with others. When, how
and how much you say
is very critical.
For example, if you
know that your colleague
has done something wrong,
or that some mistake
has occurred on his/her
part, and the situation
is rather difficult
one, you should hold
back part of your criticism,
criticize but don't
go whole hog, point
the mistake out but
keep the tone soft.
This attitude is critical
and can save you in
many difficult situation.
If you want, when the
things calm down, explain
your colleague the whole
mistake in an understanding
tone.
If in general you keep
a positive attitude
and see a silver lining
in dark clouds (that
is when things seem
to go wrong, the sales
figures are falling
or that an advertising
campaign has backfired)
you can bond better
with colleagues. Everybody
likes to be with a person
who is optimistic and
sees hope in difficult
times. However, you
should be realistic
in your judgment otherwise
you may be considered
as habitual optimistic
(in other words plain
stupid).
Don't ever forget to
compliment others when
they do some good work
and always share credit
when you are working
on a project with others.
Don't hog the credit
alone even if you are
in a position to do
so. This will soften
the strong competitive
spirit in others and
make them comfortable
to be around you since
they won't feel threatened
by you.
And if you are a person
who delivers promises,
keeps his/her words,
you are bound to be
popular with colleagues.
This is such a rare
quality these days.
And lastly, it is not
enough to know just
the names of your colleagues
or where he/she stays.
You need to really know
their distinctive personalities,
what they are like.
Their likes or tastes
in music, movies and
other things of life
and also their various
family and personal
situations. This can
help them gain confidence
in you. But never be
too pushy on questioning
others on their personal
lives. If you pester
them with personal question
they will run away from
you as if you were some
plague or something.
You should develop such
a demeanor that they
open up to you on their
own. Know when to ask
personal questions and
where to draw boundaries.
People tend to whisk
themselves away from
colleagues who get too
personal too fast. Go
slow and know when to
withdraw.
On the whole, be positive,
cheerful, encouraging
and supportive.
